Are Bali dirt bikes automatic or manual?
Our dirt bikes are manual, with a clutch— that's standard for real off-road dirt bikes; there's no automatic dirt bike on the tour. But you don't need any prior clutch experience. On both the Tabanan and Kintamanibeginner routes we start total first-timers from scratch on a light, forgiving KLX 150 or 230, and the guide coaches you through the clutch and the basics before you hit the trail. The only day where we'd want some real off-road riding behind you is the Secret Forest hard lines.
Why are dirt bikes manual, not automatic?
Real off-road bikes are manual because the clutch and gears are what give you control on terrain — easing the clutch for grip on a slippery climb, picking the right gear for a river crossing or a rocky line. An automatic scooter can't do that. So every bike in our fleet— the entry KLX 150 and 230, the Yamaha and KTM machines, and the Ducati 450 — is a manual clutch dirt bike. It's part of what makes it a genuine off-road experience and not a scooter ride.
Do I need clutch experience to ride?
No — not on the beginner routes. Many of our riders have never touched a clutch and do their first-ever off-road day with us. The day starts with a safety briefing and a gentle warm-up where the guide coaches you through the clutch, the gears and the basics on a light KLX 150 or 230before any real trail. The KLX is low, forgiving and easy to pick up — exactly what you want while you're learning.
The harder lines (the Secret Forest technical day) do expect some real off-road riding behind you — but nobody puts a first-timer on those. You ride the route that fits you, agreed before you book.
I can only ride an automatic scooter — can I still do this?
Yes. Plenty of riders arrive having only ridden an automatic scooter around Bali — or nothing at all — and ride a great first day. The clutch is a skill you pick up in the warm-up, not a barrier.
